Diaries, 1856-1890.

Vacation diaries describing tours to the Alps in Switzerland and North Italy (1885); Scotland (1887); Buxton and the English lakes (1889); and Buxton and Scarborough (1890). Entries, often made daily, described personal experiences and observations regarding travel (by rail, steamboat, carriage, as well as walks and day hikes); accommodations; meals; celebrities (the Princess Royal, the Crown Prince, and the artist Lang); issues in Parliament (especially the Irish Question); as well as visits to private estates and historical and natural sites. In other entries she described side trips to Paris and Glasgow, and a tour of the BRITANNIC. The two diaries describing the trips to Buxton are separate volumes that were glued together. The published volume, A BRIEF MEMOIR OF WILLIAM LAWRENCE, ESQ., ALDERMAN OF LONDON (1856), has been transferred to the Rare Book Room, with a photocopy retained in the collection.
